Beija-Flor de Nilópolis Takes Part in Heritage Week and Celebrates the Bembé do Mercado at IPHAN

A Beija-Flor de Nilópolis participou, nesta quarta-feira, 13, da Semana do Patrimônio, evento promovido e liderado pela superintendente do IPHAN no Rio de Janeiro, Patricia Wanzeller, com o objetivo de promover diálogos sobre o Bembé do Mercado e outros bens culturais reconhecidos como patrimônio pelo órgão.
A programação foi dividida em dois momentos. Pela manhã, uma roda de conversa mediada por Milton Cunha reuniu o carnavalesco João Vitor Araújo e os pesquisadores Vívian Pereira, Guilherme Niegro e Bruno Laurato. O encontro abordou a escolha do Bembé do Mercado como enredo da Beija-Flor para 2026 e revelou bastidores do processo de pesquisa que dará vida à narrativa que a escola levará para a Marquês de Sapucaí.
João Vitor lembrou que, há dois meses, recebeu uma carta de agradecimento do presidente do IPHAN, Leandro Grass, pela escolha do tema.
“É uma honra ver a Beija-Flor reconhecida por um órgão tão importante para a preservação do nosso patrimônio cultural. O Bembé do Mercado é uma celebração de resistência e ancestralidade, e nossa missão é levar essa história para o mundo com todo o respeito e a grandiosidade que ela merece”, declarou João Vitor Araújo.
À noite, no edifício histórico da Superintendência do IPHAN, a bateria da Beija-Flor, sob o comando dos mestres Plinio e Rodney, fez uma apresentação especial que contou também com a participação do lendário casal de mestre-sala e porta-bandeira Claudinho e Selminha Sorriso, encantando o público e levando o ritmo, a elegância e a tradição de Nilópolis para o centro da celebração cultural.

On Wednesday, the 13th, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis participated in Heritage Week, an event promoted and led by the superintendent of IPHAN in Rio de Janeiro, Patricia Wanzeller, aimed at fostering dialogue about the Bembé do Mercado and other cultural assets recognized as heritage by the institution.
The program was divided into two moments. In the morning, a discussion circle moderated by Milton Cunha brought together carnival designer João Vitor Araújo and researchers Vívian Pereira, Guilherme Niegro, and Bruno Laurato. The meeting addressed the choice of the Bembé do Mercado as Beija-Flor’s 2026 theme and revealed behind-the-scenes details of the research process that will bring to life the narrative the school will present on the Marquês de Sapucaí.
João Vitor recalled that, two months ago, he received a letter of appreciation from IPHAN’s president, Leandro Grass, for the choice of theme. “It is an honor to see Beija-Flor recognized by such an important institution for the preservation of our cultural heritage. The Bembé do Mercado is a celebration of resistance and ancestry, and our mission is to bring this story to the world with all the respect and grandeur it deserves,” said João Vitor Araújo.
In the evening, at the historic building of IPHAN’s Superintendence, Beija-Flor’s drum section, under the leadership of masters Plinio and Rodney, gave a special performance that also featured the legendary master of ceremonies and flag bearer couple Claudinho and Selminha Sorriso, captivating the audience and bringing the rhythm, elegance, and tradition of Nilópolis to the heart of the cultural celebration.
