Bloco Loucura Suburbana Takes Over the Streets of Engenho de Dentro and Celebrates Its Silver Jubilee with a Parade of Inclusion and Affection

Nesta quinta-feira, 27 de fevereiro, o Bloco Loucura Suburbana tomou mais uma vez as ruas do Engenho de Dentro, na Zona Norte do Rio, celebrando 25 anos de história. Com um cortejo marcado por muita emoção, o enredo “Bodas de Loucura”, comemorando as bodas de prata do bloco,  reuniu os clientes do Instituto Municipal Nise da Silveira e suas famílias, além de profissionais de saúde mental e moradores do bairro.
“Participar do Loucura Suburbana é um ato político. A arte é uma ferramenta de cuidado. Vir para o bloco é resistência, é cuidado em saúde mental”, afirma Lidiane Aires Cruz, psicóloga do Deambulatório de Guaratiba.
A adesão dos moradores reforça a importância do bloco, que já se tornou um patrimônio do bairro com seu importante papel na luta antimanicomial, promovendo a inclusão através da cultura e da arte.
 “As bodas de prata do Loucura representam um avanço na luta antimanicomial e pela reforma psiquiátrica. Estar nas ruas do Engenho de Dentro é reafirmar que a loucura faz parte da cidade, com alegria e afeto”, destaca Érica Pontes Silva, diretora do Instituto Municipal Nise da Silveira.
A bateria Insandecida embalou o desfile, marcado por fantasias coloridas e símbolos de liberdade, como o estandarte deste ano: uma criança rompendo uma camisa de força e segurando um pincel.
 “O Loucura Suburbana é um bloco único, que une trabalhadores da saúde mental, a comunidade e foliões no nosso bairro. Isso é revolucionário”, afirma Bruno Dias, morador de Engenho de Dentro.
Mais do que um bloco, o Loucura Suburbana é um movimento de inclusão que atua o ano inteiro com oficinas de percussão e adereços, além de atividades culturais voltadas para a integração social. Desde sua fundação, tornou-se um símbolo de resistência e combate ao estigma da saúde mental. Em 2010, foi reconhecido como o primeiro Ponto de Cultura em saúde mental do Rio e em 2021 recebeu o título de Patrimônio Cultural de Natureza Imaterial do Povo Carioca.

The event, held on Thursday, February 27, brought together residents, mental health professionals, and clients of the Instituto Municipal Nise da Silveira.
On Thursday, February 27, the Bloco Loucura Suburbana once again took to the streets of Engenho de Dentro, in Rio’s North Zone, celebrating 25 years of history. With a highly emotional parade, the theme “Bodas de Loucura” (Silver Jubilee of Madness) marked the bloc’s milestone anniversary, bringing together clients of the Instituto Municipal Nise da Silveira and their families, as well as mental health professionals and local residents.
“Participating in Loucura Suburbana is a political act. Art is a tool for care. Coming to the bloco is an act of resistance, a form of mental health care,” says Lidiane Aires Cruz, a psychologist at the Guaratiba Outpatient Clinic.
The participation of residents reinforces the importance of the bloco, which has become a cultural landmark in the neighborhood, playing a crucial role in the anti-asylum movement and promoting inclusion through art and culture.
“Loucura’s silver jubilee represents progress in the fight against asylums and for psychiatric reform. Taking to the streets of Engenho de Dentro reaffirms that madness is part of the city, with joy and affection,” highlights Érica Pontes Silva, director of the Instituto Municipal Nise da Silveira.
The Bateria Insandecida set the rhythm for the parade, which was marked by colorful costumes and symbols of freedom, including this year’s banner: a child breaking free from a straitjacket while holding a paintbrush.
“Loucura Suburbana is a unique bloco that unites mental health workers, the community, and revelers in our neighborhood. That is revolutionary,” says Bruno Dias, a resident of Engenho de Dentro.
More than just a bloco, Loucura Suburbana is a movement for inclusion, working year-round with percussion and costume workshops, as well as cultural activities aimed at social integration. Since its foundation, it has become a symbol of resistance and the fight against the stigma of mental health.
In 2010, it was recognized as the first Ponto de Cultura (Culture Hub) focused on mental health in Rio, and in 2021, it was awarded the title of Cultural Heritage of Intangible Nature of the People of Rio de Janeiro.
