Governor Cláudio Castro Orders Renewal of Metro Social Fare; Passengers Will Continue to Pay R$ 5

More than 111 million transactions with the fare benefit have already been recorded in the metro system

Governor Cláudio Castro has ordered the renewal of the Metro Social Fare, as published in a special edition of the Official Gazette this Thursday (10). Despite the upcoming fare increase to R$ 7.90 on April 12, passengers will still be able to pay R$ 5.

The Social Fare applies to users aged between 5 and 64 years with a monthly income of up to R$ 3,205.20. They must also have a Riocard Mais card enabled for the Intermunicipal Single Ticket (Bilhete Único Intermunicipal – BUI) and linked to their CPF. Individuals who work without a formal contract or have no income are also eligible for the discount.

— The Social Fare is an important tool for social protection. We understand how inflation has eroded workers’ wages in recent years. The R$ 5 fare for integration is a huge relief for people’s pockets. By maintaining this benefit, we are promoting fairness and helping to protect jobs, — stated Cláudio Castro.

Currently, around 1.4 million people benefit from the BUI. Since the R$ 5 fare discount came into effect on the metro system on April 12, 2023, more than 111 million transactions using the fare benefit have been recorded. The discount is granted through the State Secretariat for Transport and Urban Mobility (Setram).

With the discounted fare maintained, registered users will save around R$ 127 per month, based on 22 trips (round-trip) during the period.
