Prefeito entrega chave da cidade ao Rei Momo e abre oficialmente o Carnaval do Rio 2025

Evento foi realizado no Palácio da Cidade e contou com a presença da Corte Real da festa carioca

O Carnaval de 2025 do Rio está oficialmente aberto. Ao entregar, de forma simbólica, a chave da cidade ao Rei Momo Kaio Mackenzie, o prefeito Eduardo Paes inaugurou, na manhã desta sexta-feira (28/2), a temporada de folia no Rio e o início do reinado da corte carnavalesca deste ano. A cerimônia realizada no Palácio da Cidade, em Botafogo, na Zona Sul da cidade, foi apresentada pelo carnavalesco e pesquisador Milton Cunha e contou com a presença de toda a Corte Real. 

– Esse é o meu 13º ano transmitindo esse cargo tão honroso e que me dá tanto orgulho. A maneira como o Rio construiu sua identidade, sua força e imagem tem relação direta com a maior manifestação cultural do nosso país e do mundo. O meu muito obrigado a essa gente do samba, das escolas de samba, dos blocos, que celebram a vida todos os anos no nosso Carnaval – afirmou o prefeito, comemorando o momento de celebração na “capital mundial do Carnaval”.

A cerimônia também contou com apresentações da bateria da Unidos do Viradouro, escola campeã do Carnaval do ano passado, e da banda da Guarda Municipal do Rio.   

Agradecendo a presença de todos, o Rei Momo Kaio Mackenzie ressaltou a importância do momento para a cidade.

– Esse é um evento de suma importância para o Carnaval e para a cultura carioca. Como Rei Momo dessa cidade maravilhosa que tem o maior Carnaval do mundo, é uma honra receber a chave da cidade. O povo merece, precisa e quer o Carnaval de 2025. Tenho certeza que vai ser o maior de todos os tempos. Oficialmente eu declaro aberto o Carnaval de 2025 –  disse Mackenzie.

Além do Rei Momo, também estiveram presentes na cerimônia a Rainha do Carnaval 2025, Thuane Ribeiro; as Princesas Rhuanda Monteiro e Jéssica Almeida; o muso Luis Otávio Antonio dos Santos; a musa Bianca de Oliveira Mourão Ermida; e também do cidadão não-binário Lucas Antonio Valentim da Silva. 

Guardiã da chave da cidade, que é entregue ao Rei Momo a cada Carnaval, a família Candonga participou da solenidade. Também estiveram presentes representantes das Associações das Velhas Guardas das escolas de samba cariocas e o casal Raul Farias Lima e Iza Xavier, que forma a Dupla do Rio de Perna de Pau, mestre-sala e porta-bandeira da Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro e da Riotur.

Mayor Hands Over the Key to the City to King Momo and Officially Opens Rio Carnival 2025

The event was held at the Palácio da Cidade and was attended by the Royal Court of Rio’s biggest celebration.
Rio’s 2025 Carnival is officially open. In a symbolic gesture, Mayor Eduardo Paes handed over the key to the city to King Momo, Kaio Mackenzie, officially inaugurating the festive season in Rio and marking the beginning of this year’s reign of the carnival court. The ceremony took place on the morning of Friday (February 28) at the Palácio da Cidade in Botafogo, in the city’s South Zone. It was hosted by carnival expert and researcher Milton Cunha and featured the entire Royal Court.
“This is my 13th year passing on this honorable duty, which fills me with immense pride. The way Rio has built its identity, its strength, and its image is directly linked to the greatest cultural manifestation of our country and the world. My heartfelt thanks go to the people of samba, the samba schools, and the street blocos, who celebrate life every year in our Carnival,” said the mayor, celebrating the festive moment in the “Carnival capital of the world.”
The ceremony also featured performances by the drum section of Unidos do Viradouro, the reigning champion of last year’s Carnival, and the Rio Municipal Guard Band.
Expressing his gratitude to all in attendance, King Momo Kaio Mackenzie highlighted the importance of the occasion for the city.
“This is an event of utmost importance for Carnival and for Rio’s culture. As King Momo of this marvelous city, home to the world’s greatest Carnival, it is an honor to receive the key to the city. The people deserve, need, and want the 2025 Carnival. I am certain it will be the greatest of all time. I hereby officially declare the 2025 Carnival open,” Mackenzie proclaimed.
Alongside King Momo, the ceremony was attended by the 2025 Carnival Queen, Thuane Ribeiro; Princesses Rhuanda Monteiro and Jéssica Almeida; muse Luis Otávio Antonio dos Santos; muse Bianca de Oliveira Mourão Ermida; and non-binary citizen Lucas Antonio Valentim da Silva.
The Candonga family, guardians of the city key that is handed over to King Momo every Carnival, also took part in the ceremony. Representatives from the Associations of the Old Guards of Rio’s samba schools were present, as well as Raul Farias Lima and Iza Xavier, who form the “Dupla do Rio de Perna de Pau,” the master of ceremonies and flag bearer representing the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and Riotur.
