Eleição na Portela promete ser uma das mais acirradas dos últimos anos com a entrada da chapa “União Portela”

A eleição para a presidência da Portela, marcada para a segunda quinzena de maio, promete movimentar os bastidores da azul e branco de Madureira como há muito tempo não se via. A disputa ganhou novos contornos com o anúncio da chapa “União Portela”, encabeçada por Júnior Escafura, atual secretário da Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba (Liesa) e integrante de uma das famílias mais tradicionais da agremiação.
Filho do ex-presidente Luís Carlos Escafura, que comandou a escola entre 1995 e 1997, e neto do lendário Piruinha — figura emblemática da Portela, que atuou como diretor de carnaval, diretor de harmonia, compositor e vice-presidente — Júnior traz consigo um legado de fortes raízes portelenses, mas também um histórico de rupturas.
Após anos atuando nos bastidores e ocupando cargos de relevância na escola, sua saída da vice-presidência não se deu em clima amistoso. O episódio, que deixou marcas em sua trajetória, parece ainda recente na memória do candidato. Em uma visita recente ao Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida, Escafura fez um desabafo nas redes sociais que chamou atenção: “Os últimos dias não têm sido fáceis para mim. A decepção, a tristeza são sentimentos que magoam demais o coração.”
A entrada da chapa “União Portela” deve intensificar ainda mais a corrida pelo comando da agremiação, que já vinha se desenhando como uma das mais polarizadas dos últimos anos. Nos bastidores, aliados e adversários se movimentam, reuniões se intensificam e o clima eleitoral começa a tomar conta da quadra da escola. A expectativa é de uma disputa acirrada, pautada tanto por propostas para o futuro quanto por capítulos mal resolvidos do passado.

The election for the presidency of Portela, scheduled for the second half of May, promises to stir up the backstage of the blue and white of Madureira like it hasn’t in a long time. The race took a new turn with the announcement of the “União Portela” slate, led by Júnior Escafura, current secretary of LIESA (Independent League of Samba Schools) and member of one of the school’s most traditional families.
Son of former president Luís Carlos Escafura, who led the school from 1995 to 1997, and grandson of the legendary Piruinha — an iconic figure of Portela who served as carnival director, harmony director, composer, and vice-president — Júnior brings with him a legacy deeply rooted in Portela’s history, but also a background marked by internal rifts.
After years of working behind the scenes and holding key roles at the school, his departure from the vice-presidency was far from amicable. The episode left marks on his journey and still seems fresh in the candidate’s memory. In a recent visit to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, Escafura made a striking confession on social media: “These past few days haven’t been easy for me. Disappointment and sadness are feelings that deeply wound the heart.”
The entrance of the “União Portela” slate is expected to further intensify the race for control of the samba school, which was already shaping up to be one of the most polarized in recent years. Behind the scenes, both allies and opponents are mobilizing, meetings are picking up pace, and the electoral atmosphere is beginning to take over the school’s headquarters.
Expectations are high for a tight race, driven not only by visions for the future but also by unresolved chapters from the past. The community, in turn, is closely watching every development. After all, what’s at stake is not just the presidency, but the direction of one of the most traditional and victorious samba schools in Rio’s carnival.
