Rio Memórias Launches 20th Gallery, “Rio sobre rochas” (“Rio on Rocks”), at Free Event at PUC Rio

Rio Memórias Launches 20th Gallery, “Rio sobre rochas” (“Rio on Rocks”), at Free Event at PUC Rio
The launch will feature the participation of the Secretary of Environment and Climate, Tainá de Paula, and the geographer and gallery curator Marcelo Motta, along with performances by Maui and Cau (4-Ó)
On Wednesday, July 9, from 12 PM to 2 PM, Rio Memórias will host the launch of its newest online gallery, “Rio sobre rochas” (“Rio on Rocks”), at the Junito Brandão Amphitheater at PUC Rio (Rua Marquês de São Vicente, 225, Gávea). The event includes a conversation between geographer Marcelo Motta de Freitas, curator of the gallery, and Secretary of Environment and Climate, Tainá de Paula.
After exploring the city’s social history, the virtual museum now turns its attention to the geography of Rio, where the landscape is not just a backdrop—but a protagonist in the life that pulses between mountains, valleys, beaches, and lowlands.
From its very foundation, Rio de Janeiro has been shaped by this terrain—the stage on which its stories unfold. Diverting rivers, filling swamps, beaches, and mangroves, climbing peaks and digging underground—inhabiting the city has always meant building and rebuilding the very space of living.
Following the conversation, there will be a performance by singer and poet Maui, a rising talent from Duque de Caxias known for blending beats and electronic genres, and a special appearance by poet Cau, also known as 4-Ó, in a powerful blend of music and poetry.
Rio Memórias is sponsored by Norsul, Kasznar Leonardos, Impulso, and the Ministry of Culture through the Federal Cultural Incentive Law; and by the City of Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Department of Culture, BTG Pactual, EloGroup, InterRisk, and Dinsmore Compass, through the Municipal Cultural Incentive Law (ISS Law).
ABOUT THE GALLERY “RIO SOBRE ROCHAS”
Curated by Dr. Marcelo Motta de Freitas, a geographer and professor at PUC Rio, this is the 20th gallery presented by Rio Memórias. The original content explores the profound influence that Rio’s geography has had on its history—and how history, in turn, has reshaped the city since its inception.
“Space is composed of the inseparable whole between the occupied area (formed by relief, ecosystems, atmospheric dynamics) and the processes of occupation (related to power, cultural, political, social, and economic relations)—an amalgam that records, inscribes, and marks the ground with its unique and exclusive imprint—which we commonly call landscape or, more profoundly, geography: the graphic writing on earth. This landscape is made up of visible things, but also of intangibilities that arise from social relationships and involve power, economic value, and political and cultural interests,” explains the curator.
