Sonho do Beija-Flor Launches Anti-Racist Education Handbook Next Saturday

*Sonho do Beija-Flor lança cartilha de Educação Antirracista no próximo sábado*

A Escola de Samba Mirim Sonho do Beija-Flor fará no próximo sábado, 4 de outubro, o lançamento de sua primeira Cartilha de Educação Antirracista, que será disponibilizada em versão física e on-line. O material foi elaborado pelo Departamento Pedagógico da escola, sob a coordenação da diretora pedagógica Fátima Theodoro.

A publicação foi desenvolvida a partir do enredo de 2022, “Empretecer o Pensamento é Ouvir a Voz da Beija-Flor”, que não apenas marcou a avenida, como também transformou e inspirou Selminha Sorriso, presidente da escola mirim, a se engajar ainda mais como ativista do movimento antirracista.

Com esse espírito, a cartilha tem como diferencial trabalhar a educação antirracista a partir do lugar de fala da escola de samba. Como parte do projeto, serão distribuídas cartilhas educativas que abordarão a Lei 10.639/2003, a história da Beija-Flor e o letramento racial, valorizando a cultura afro-brasileira.

As crianças vão conhecer figuras centrais da trajetória da azul e branca de Nilópolis, como Joãosinho Trinta, mestre Laíla, Neguinho da Beija-Flor, Cabana, Tia Nadir, Juju Maravilha, Élcio PV, Pinah, Marlene Sennas, entre outras lideranças que ajudaram a construir a grandiosidade da escola.

As atividades terão o apoio de professores da rede pública municipal de Nilópolis, além de outros educadores voluntários que se somaram à iniciativa, reforçando o caráter comunitário e coletivo do projeto.

Para Selminha Sorriso, o projeto reforça a função social do samba: “Não basta encantar na avenida. É preciso saber de onde viemos, a hierarquia do samba, respeitando e agradecendo a todos que chegaram primeiro. Eles precisam se orgulhar por fazer parte desse território e da nossa cultura de resistência cultural.”

A cartilha foi elaborada pelo Departamento Pedagógico, formado por:

• Professores: Márcia Cristina Barbosa, Juliano Dumani, Nitton Barbosa Filho, Denise Cruz, Renato Ferreira Ione Carmo, Fábio Conceição, Leonardo Tenreiro e Jeanne Pierre dos Santos.

Com linguagem acessível e atividades práticas, a publicação — em formato físico e digital — convida crianças, jovens e comunidade a refletirem sobre o racismo e a importância de valorizar a ancestralidade e a história do samba como ferramenta de resistência, educação e cidadania.

Sonho do Beija-Flor Launches Anti-Racist Education Handbook Next Saturday

The youth samba school Sonho do Beija-Flor will launch its first Anti-Racist Education Handbook next Saturday, October 4, available both in print and online. The material was created by the school’s Pedagogical Department, under the coordination of educational director Fátima Theodoro.
The publication was developed from the 2022 theme, “Blackening Thought is Listening to the Voice of Beija-Flor”, which not only left its mark on the avenue but also transformed and inspired Selminha Sorriso, president of the youth school, to become even more engaged as an anti-racist activist. With this spirit, the handbook stands out by addressing anti-racist education from the perspective and lived experience of the samba school.
As part of the project, educational booklets will be distributed covering Law 10.639/2003, the history of Beija-Flor, and racial literacy, while also highlighting Afro-Brazilian culture. Children will learn about central figures in the legacy of the blue and white school from Nilópolis, such as Joãosinho Trinta, Mestre Laíla, Neguinho da Beija-Flor, Cabana, Tia Nadir, Juju Maravilha, Élcio PV, Pinah, Marlene Sennas, among other leaders who helped build the grandeur of the school.
The activities will be supported by public school teachers from the city of Nilópolis, as well as volunteer educators who have joined the initiative, reinforcing the project’s collective and community-based nature.
For Selminha Sorriso, the project strengthens the social role of samba:
“It’s not enough to enchant on the avenue. We must know where we come from, the hierarchy of samba, respecting and honoring those who came before us. They should feel proud to be part of this territory and of our culture of resistance.”

With accessible language and practical activities, the publication — available in both print and digital formats — invites children, youth, and the wider community to reflect on racism and the importance of valuing ancestry and the history of samba as a tool for resistance, education, and citizenship.
