_Escola campeã de 2025 vai retratar o Bembé do Mercado, cerimônia centenária realizada em Santo Amaro da Purificação, na Bahia_

A Beija-Flor de Nilópolis escolheu como enredo para o Carnaval 2026 o Bembé do Mercado, maior Candomblé de rua do mundo, celebrado há 136 anos em Santo Amaro da Purificação, no Recôncavo Baiano. A escola, que conquistou o título deste ano na Marquês de Sapucaí, busca o bicampeonato destacando uma das mais importantes manifestações de resistência e fé do povo preto no Brasil.

Realizado desde 1889, um ano após a abolição da escravidão no país, o Bembé do Mercado reúne mais de 60 terreiros de matriz africana e promove, em praça pública, uma extensa programação cultural ao longo de cinco dias. O ponto alto da celebração é o xirê, seguido pelo cortejo e pela entrega de presentes às orixás Iemanjá e Oxum, em agradecimento à liberdade conquistada após a assinatura da Lei Áurea. Reconhecida como Patrimônio Imaterial da Bahia (2012) e do Brasil (2019), a celebração atualmente pleiteia o título de Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade pela Unesco.

Nesta segunda-feira (14), a diretoria da Beija-Flor desembarcou em Santo Amaro para uma imersão cultural na cidade. A comitiva irá se reunir com os detentores, autoridades locais, lideranças religiosas, historiadores e pesquisadores, iniciando o processo de construção do enredo.

“Para nós, é um orgulho contar mais uma história de protagonismo e resistência preta na Sapucaí. É a nossa identidade, está no nosso DNA, e é como a comunidade nilopolitana se vê. O Bembé e a Beija-Flor têm muito em comum, e estamos muito felizes e honrados em apresentar essa cerimônia tão valiosa para todo o Brasil”, afirmou o presidente da escola, Almir Reis.

O enredo será desenvolvido pelo carnavalesco João Vitor Araújo, que assina seu terceiro desfile pela agremiação. “O Bembé do Mercado é de uma potência simbólica e estética imensa. É um enredo que nos atravessa, que nos conecta com a ancestralidade e com a luta do povo preto no Brasil. Ter a chance de criar um enredo autoral como esse, com tamanha relevância histórica e espiritual, é um presente. É uma responsabilidade enorme, mas também uma felicidade imensa”, destacou o artista.

A pesquisa será conduzida por Guilherme Niegro, Vivian Pereira e Bruno Laurato, e a direção de carnaval segue com Marco Antônio Marino.

Para Pai Pote, babalorixá do Ilê Axé Ojú Onirê, guardião e presidente da Associação Beneficente Bembé do Mercado, a parceria representa um reconhecimento histórico: “A escolha da Beija-Flor é um marco. Levar o Bembé para a Sapucaí é dar visibilidade a uma tradição que há mais de um século reafirma a força do povo preto e de santo nas ruas. Essa visibilidade fortalece nossa luta, amplia nosso alcance e ajuda a combater o preconceito com informação, beleza e ancestralidade. É sobre memória, resistência e orgulho. O Bembé é do povo, é sagrado, e agora será visto, sentido e celebrado por milhões”.

A edição de 2025 do Bembé será realizada em maio e marcará os 136 anos de existência da celebração. Em 2026, a Beija-Flor será a segunda escola a desfilar na segunda noite de Carnaval.

The 2025 champion samba school will portray the Bembé do Mercado, a century-old ceremony held in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia
Beija-Flor de Nilópolis has chosen the Bembé do Mercado—the world’s largest street Candomblé celebration—as its theme for Carnival 2026. This event has been celebrated for 136 years in Santo Amaro da Purificação, in the Recôncavo region of Bahia. The school, which won the title this year at the Marquês de Sapucaí, aims for a back-to-back championship by highlighting one of the most significant manifestations of Black resistance and faith in Brazil.
Held since 1889, just one year after the abolition of slavery in the country, the Bembé do Mercado brings together more than 60 Afro-Brazilian religious temples (terreiros) and offers a rich five-day cultural program in a public square. The highlight of the celebration is the xirê, followed by a procession and the offering of gifts to the orixás Iemanjá and Oxum, in gratitude for the freedom achieved after the signing of the Lei Áurea (Golden Law).
Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bahia (2012) and of Brazil (2019), the celebration is currently seeking recognition as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
This Monday (14th), Beija-Flor’s leadership arrived in Santo Amaro for a cultural immersion in the city. The delegation will meet with tradition bearers, local authorities, religious leaders, historians, and researchers, kicking off the creative process for the theme.
“For us, it’s a source of pride to tell another story of Black protagonism and resistance at Sapucaí. It’s our identity, it’s in our DNA, and it’s how the Nilópolis community sees itself. The Bembé and Beija-Flor have a lot in common, and we are very happy and honored to present this valuable ceremony to all of Brazil,” said the school’s president, Almir Reis.
The theme will be developed by carnival designer João Vitor Araújo, who will be crafting his third parade for the school. “The Bembé do Mercado holds immense symbolic and aesthetic power. It’s a theme that moves us, that connects us with our ancestry and with the struggle of Black people in Brazil. Having the chance to create an original theme like this, with such historical and spiritual relevance, is a gift. It’s a huge responsibility, but also an immense joy,” said the artist.
The research will be led by Guilherme Niegro, Vivian Pereira, and Bruno Laurato, and the carnival direction remains with Marco Antônio Marino.
For Pai Pote, babalorixá of Ilê Axé Ojú Onirê and president of the Bembé do Mercado Benevolent Association, the partnership represents historic recognition:
“Beija-Flor’s choice is a milestone. Bringing the Bembé to Sapucaí gives visibility to a tradition that, for over a century, reaffirms the strength of Black and Afro-Brazilian religious culture in the streets. This visibility strengthens our struggle, expands our reach, and helps combat prejudice through information, beauty, and ancestry. It’s about memory, resistance, and pride. The Bembé belongs to the people, it is sacred, and now it will be seen, felt, and celebrated by millions.”
The 2025 edition of the Bembé will be held in May and will mark the celebration’s 136th anniversary. In 2026, Beija-Flor will be the second school to parade on the second night of Carnival.
