A porta-bandeira da Beija-Flor de Nilópolis e diretora do Departamento Cultural da escola, Selminha Sorriso, participou neste fim de semana do 77º Desfile de Carnaval de Boston, em Massachusetts (EUA), promovido pela Carnival Society Boston. O evento é um dos mais tradicionais da comunidade brasileira em New England — a maior do país — e reuniu milhares de pessoas em uma grande celebração da cultura popular.
Como parte da agenda, a Carnival Society Boston foi recebida na Embaixada brasileira em Boston para um encontro diplomático com o embaixador Santiago Mourão. Na ocasião, foram discutidos temas como o futuro da própria sociedade carnavalesca, a diplomacia momesca internacional e o fortalecimento do carnaval como expressão cultural da comunidade brasileira nos Estados Unidos.
Selminha aproveitou a oportunidade para entregar ao embaixador uma camiseta do enredo Bembé do Mercado, tema da Beija-Flor para o Carnaval 2026.
Além de ser um dos nomes mais emblemáticos do carnaval carioca, com mais de 30 anos de trajetória como porta-bandeira, Selminha é também presidenta da escola mirim Sonho do Beija-Flor, onde atua na formação de novos talentos para o mundo do samba.
“É uma honra representar o Brasil e a Beija-Flor em um espaço de tanta diversidade cultural como a Sociedade Carnavalesca de Boston. O samba é nossa identidade e levá-lo ao mundo reforça que o carnaval não é apenas festa, mas também arte, diplomacia e transformação social”, afirmou Selminha Sorriso.

Selminha Sorriso Represents Beija-Flor and Brazil in Carnival Celebration in the U.S.
Beija-Flor de Nilópolis’ flag bearer and Cultural Department director, Selminha Sorriso, took part this past weekend in the 77th Boston Carnival Parade in Massachusetts (USA), organized by the Carnival Society Boston. The event is one of the most traditional within the Brazilian community in New England — the largest in the country — and brought together thousands of people in a vibrant celebration of popular culture.
As part of the program, the Carnival Society Boston was welcomed at the Brazilian Consulate in Boston for a diplomatic meeting with Ambassador Santiago Mourão. The discussions included the future of the carnival society itself, the role of international carnival diplomacy, and the strengthening of carnival as a cultural expression of the Brazilian community in the United States.
During the meeting, Selminha presented the ambassador with a T-shirt featuring “Bembé do Mercado”, Beija-Flor’s theme for Carnival 2026.
In addition to being one of the most iconic figures in Rio’s carnival, with over 30 years of experience as a flag bearer, Selminha also serves as president of the youth samba school Sonho do Beija-Flor, where she works on developing new talents for the world of samba.
“It is an honor to represent Brazil and Beija-Flor in such a culturally diverse space as the Boston Carnival Society. Samba is our identity, and bringing it to the world reinforces that carnival is not just a party, but also art, diplomacy, and social transformation,” said Selminha Sorriso.
