Após um processo de formação que iniciou em março deste ano, a Oficina Permanente de Teatro e Circo do CETA, com produção da Cia Atores de Copacabana, realiza apresentação do seu espetáculo de formatura UBU REI – uma Comédia Bufa Popular, nos dias 28 e 29 de novembro, na Arena Carioca Jovelina Pérola Negra, na Pavuna, zona Norte do Rio de Janeiro.
O projeto Oficina Permanente de Teatro e Circo é patrocinado pelo Governo Federal, Ministério da Cultura, Prefeitura da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro e Secretaria Municipal de Cultura através do Edital Pró-Carioca Linguagens – Programa de Fomento à Cultura Carioca, Edição PNAB – Política Nacional Aldir Blanc, e encabeçado pelo diretor teatral e produtor cultural, Lino Rocca e a atriz e artista circense Vânia Santos.
A oficina tem como base a difusão do Teatro e do Circo nas periferias da cidade do Rio de Janeiro e Baixada Fluminense. Segundo Lino Rocca, a Oficina Permanente de Teatro e Circo é um marco na história cultural do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, oferecendo aulas de malabarismo, acrobacias, técnicas teatrais, palhaçaria, perna de pau, lira, tecido entre outras disciplinas.
“A Oficina divide-se em dois tipos de formação: uma de técnicas circenses e outra em técnicas teatrais inserindo seus participantes no mercado de trabalho de animação cultural, recreação infantil e no universo profissional circense e teatral”, afirma Rocca.
A Encenação
A Oficina Permanente tem como eixo seus Estudos sobre a Performance e o Artista (EPA!), que consiste em uma pesquisa realizada, ao longo de 27 anos, sobre o processo criativo do artista. Variadas técnicas psicofísicas, envolvendo as linguagens de teatro e circo, são introduzidas, paulatinamente, no trabalho cotidiano do Artista desenvolvendo seu processo criativo para composições de Performances sejam individuais ou coletivas em suas respectivas linguagens.
“Ubu Rei foi escrita por Alfred Jarry no final do século 19 e, nos 120 anos em que vem sendo encenada em todo o mundo, não perde a atualidade. É considerada uma peça visionária e precursora de vários movimentos estéticos como: o Surrealismo, o Dadaísmo e o Teatro do Absurdo, mas principalmente, por marcar a vinda da era de totalitarismos, extremismos e ditaduras nos séculos 20 e 21”, analisa Vânia Santos.
Rocca faz um paralelo entre os protagonistas da montagem do final do século 19 com alguns mandatários atuais de países, lembrando que o modus operandi é o mesmo de mais de 100 anos atrás.
“Se o Pai e a Mãe Ubu encarnaram casos de deturpação e abuso de poder ao longo da história, hoje, eles representam os dirigentes que incitam o ódio, o preconceito racial e social, disseminando a violência física e digital, desmantelando políticas públicas e sufocando os direitos humanos. Enquanto caem na gargalhada rindo do sofrimento humano com total falta de empatia com os conceitos de Povo e Nação”, pontua Rocca.
Segundo Lino Rocca, a montagem enxerga o mundo sob um olhar bufonesco e a cena surge inspirada pelo movimento de contracultura brasileiro – “Tropicalista – abraçando uma leitura contemporânea repleta de paródia e lirismo. Ainda de acordo com o diretor, a perspectiva é promover nos artistas das periferias, o desejo de desenvolver um treinamento autoral, realizando uma pesquisa sobre o seu processo criativo e fortalecendo seus territórios como a região da Zona Norte do Rio de Janeiro.
“A ideia é formar um grupo de artistas que estejam interessados em processos de pesquisa e que queiram participar da montagem do Ubu Rei, tendo como contexto o seu processo de participação social. Então, UBU REI – uma Comédia Bufa Popular vem com esse intuito de ter essa relação provocativa na sociedade promovendo a discussão sobre a questão do poder e de sistemas autocráticos e ditatoriais que vem assolando a civilização ocidental na atualidade. Como o próprio Pai UBU ressalta: “Se não houvesse a Polônia, não haveria Poloneses”, finaliza o diretor.

UBU ROI – A Popular Buffoon Comedy
After a training process that began in March of this year, the Permanent Theater and Circus Workshop of CETA, produced by Cia Atores de Copacabana, presents its graduation show UBU ROI – A Popular Buffoon Comedy on November 28 and 29 at Arena Carioca Jovelina Pérola Negra, in Pavuna, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The Permanent Theater and Circus Workshop project is sponsored by the Federal Government, Ministry of Culture, Rio de Janeiro City Hall, and the Municipal Secretariat of Culture through the Pró-Carioca Linguagens Public Notice – Carioca Culture Promotion Program, PNAB Edition – Aldir Blanc National Policy. The project is led by theater director and cultural producer Lino Rocca and actress and circus artist Vânia Santos.
The workshop is centered on spreading Theater and Circus throughout the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro and the Baixada Fluminense region. According to Lino Rocca, the Permanent Theater and Circus Workshop is a milestone in the cultural history of the State of Rio de Janeiro, offering classes in juggling, acrobatics, acting techniques, clowning, stilt walking, lyra, fabric, among other disciplines.
“The Workshop is divided into two training paths: one in circus techniques and another in theatrical techniques, inserting participants into the job market of cultural entertainment, children’s recreation, and the professional circus and theater fields,” says Rocca.
The Staging
The Permanent Workshop is grounded in its Studies on Performance and the Artist (EPA!), a research project developed over 27 years focused on the artist’s creative process. Various psychophysical techniques involving theater and circus languages are gradually introduced into the daily work of the Artist, developing their creative processes for composing individual or collective performances in their respective disciplines.
“Ubu Roi was written by Alfred Jarry at the end of the 19th century, and in the 120 years it has been staged worldwide, it has never lost its relevance. It is considered a visionary play and a forerunner of various aesthetic movements such as Surrealism, Dadaism, and the Theater of the Absurd, but above all for foreseeing the rise of totalitarianism, extremism, and dictatorships in the 20th and 21st centuries,” analyzes Vânia Santos.
Rocca draws parallels between the play’s late 19th-century protagonists and certain current world leaders, noting that their modus operandi remains unchanged after more than a century:
“If Father and Mother Ubu embodied cases of distortion and abuse of power throughout history, today they represent leaders who incite hatred, racial and social prejudice, spreading physical and digital violence, dismantling public policies, and suffocating human rights — all while laughing at human suffering with complete lack of empathy for the concepts of People and Nation,” states Rocca.
According to Rocca, the production views the world through a buffoonish lens, and the staging is inspired by the Brazilian counterculture movement — the Tropicalistas — embracing a contemporary interpretation filled with parody and lyricism. He adds that the goal is to encourage artists from peripheral communities to develop their own creative training, researching their artistic processes, and strengthening their local territories, especially in the North Zone of Rio.
“The idea is to form a group of artists interested in research-driven processes and who want to take part in the staging of Ubu Roi, within the context of their social participation. UBU ROI – A Popular Buffoon Comedy aims to provoke society and promote discussions about power structures and autocratic or dictatorial systems that continue to affect Western civilization today. As Father Ubu himself says: ‘If there were no Poland, there would be no Poles,’” concludes the director.
