Civil Police and Public Prosecutor’s Office Launch Operation Against Criminal Organization Operating in Uruguaiana’s Popular Market

Polícia Civil e Ministério Público realizam operação contra organização criminosa que atua no Mercado Popular da Uruguaiana

Investigação teve início em 2019; agentes cumprem mandados de prisão e busca e apreensão

O Governo do Estado, por meio da Delegacia de Repressão às Ações Criminosas Organizadas e Inquéritos Especiais (Draco) e representantes do Ministério Público realizam, nesta quinta-feira (22/05), uma operação contra uma organização criminosa que atua, desde 2019, no Mercado Popular da Uruguaiana. O objetivo é cumprir mandados de prisão e de busca e apreensão. Foram solicitados bloqueios de bens e valores à Justiça. Até o momento, oito criminosos foram presos.

  • Operações como a de hoje são fruto do trabalho de excelência realizado pela Polícia Civil, com inteligência e agentes preparados. O foco da ação, além de prender os criminosos, é enfraquecer financeiramente as quadrilhas. Não vamos recuar até levarmos a paz a todos os cidadãos do estado e priorizar a segurança e bem-estar dos trabalhadores honestos que atuam na região da Uruguaiana – afirma o governador Cláudio Castro.

As investigações apontaram a existência de extorsões, com a cobrança para o pagamento de taxas para o funcionamento dos boxes no local. Além disso, eram cobrados valores referentes ao consumo de energia elétrica, de forma arbitrária. A quadrilha também realizava vendas de boxes de forma irregular. Os valores variavam entre R$ 60 mil e R$ 80 mil.

  • Estamos atacando também o braço financeiro desta organização criminosa, com pedido de bloqueio de bens e valores. Identificamos que somente um desses alvos tinha movimentado cerca de R$ 2 milhões. Esse combate à lavagem de dinheiro, aliado às prisões, é fundamental para enfraquecer e desmantelar a quadrilha – diz o secretário de Estado de Polícia Civil, delegado Felipe Curi.

De acordo com as investigações, as cobranças eram feitas de forma violenta e com ameaças. As vítimas eram coagidas a realizar os pagamentos, sob pena de terem seus negócios inviabilizados, e até de serem expulsos do local. Os mandados são cumpridos no próprio camelódromo e em endereços na Barra da Tijuca e na Baixada Fluminense.

Investigation began in 2019; officers are executing arrest and search warrants

The State Government, through the Office for the Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries (Draco) and representatives from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, launched an operation this Thursday (May 22) targeting a criminal organization operating since 2019 in the Uruguaiana Popular Market. The objective is to execute arrest and search warrants. Asset and financial blocking requests have also been submitted to the judiciary. So far, eight criminals have been arrested.

“Operations like today’s are the result of the Civil Police’s excellent work, carried out with intelligence and well-trained officers. The aim, beyond arresting criminals, is to financially cripple these gangs. We will not back down until we bring peace to every citizen in the state and ensure safety and well-being for the honest workers in the Uruguaiana area,” said Governor Cláudio Castro.

The investigation revealed extortion practices, including charging fees for the operation of market stalls. Additional fees were arbitrarily imposed for electricity usage. The gang also sold stalls illegally, with prices ranging from R$ 60,000 to R$ 80,000.

“We are also targeting the financial arm of this criminal organization, with asset and financial freeze requests. We found that just one of the suspects had moved about R$ 2 million. Tackling money laundering alongside arrests is key to weakening and dismantling the gang,” said Civil Police Secretary, Delegate Felipe Curi.

According to the investigation, the payments were enforced through violence and threats. Victims were coerced into paying under the risk of having their businesses shut down or even being expelled from the market. The warrants are being executed both in the market itself and at addresses in Barra da Tijuca and the Baixada Fluminense region.
